Mother's Day Flowers

My husband and I really believe in “curb appeal.” Unfortunately, right now, our home has none. With the onset of spring, flowers bloom as well as weeds. Bloom probably isn’t the correct verb to use when making reference to weeds. These weeds -- vines – are coiled around our fence. What little flowers that sprouted are gone, as they have fallen prey to the weeds and their destruction.

Until we tackle our curb appeal issue, if I want to see pretty flowers, I’ll have to purchase them. But, I won’t buy any flowers until after May 9, Mother’s Day. I suspect that friends and family will send me flowers for Mothers Day. My husband typically sends me flowers from 1-800-flowers.

I saw the movie "Twilight" last year and absolutely loved it. So, of course I saw "New Moon," the second movie in the series, opening night. I went to Manhattan, New York a few months ago to get my taxes done. There was absolutely no possible way I could have driven around that city. There was wall-to-wall people and horrendous traffic!

I’ll be the first to admit that I spend a considerable amount of time on the Internet. It’s such an efficient and effortless way to obtain information and keep in touch with family and friends. Lately, I’ve been noticing that websites are increasingly growing, in a technological sense.

Survey Resource Center, a company that has developed a unique and effective way to provide fresh and qualified sales leads to the financial services and insurance industry, for example, has unique features on its website. First, it simply looks “high-tech,” with the graphics, extensive level of detail, and note at the footer of the screen that provides visitors’ IP address! Survey Resource Center’s website has log in capabilities for clients as well as a “search” feature. While these features are unique, aside from the IP address at the footer of the screen, they appear to be “the standard” for most websites.

Survey Resource Center has definitely kept up with the Jones’ with its state-of-the-art website. I may just have to take a second look at my website and “upgrade.”

Print and Electronic Media

With internet usage on the rise, I often wonder how this impacts print media. Someone is reading newspapers and magazines…I can count the number of times, on both hands, that I’ve read print media this year. The times I have read them were generally in the lines at the grocery store. In any event, print and electronic platforms are the way to go.

Linus Gitahi, the Chief Executive Officer of Nation Media Group, serves the East and Central Africa market with both print and online media. We’re in a recession; however, this is the best time to travel. The first and last time I went on a cruise was in 2002 for my honeymoon. It was a lot of fun. Just a few more days until Mother’s Day. I have managed to procrastinate, like I do every year, about sending a gift to my mom. Why? When I think about precious metals, particularly, diamonds, I can’t help but ruminate about the movie, Blood Diamonds. The title “Blood Diamonds” refers to diamonds mined in African war zones and sold to finance the conflicts and profit the warlords and the diamond companies across the world. The film shows a country torn apart by the struggle between government soldiers and rebel forces.

As an expert in investing in bullion and precious metals, I am curious as to Andrew Wilshire’s feelings about diamonds and its use to finance wars. I know that after watching the heartfelt movie Blood Diamonds, my love for precious metals changed.

Christmas is over and I’m already thinking about buying more gifts. My fraternal twin boys were born four years ago in the month of February. As I think about planning their fourth birthday party, I can’t help but reflect on my pregnancy and birth…

Rewind - four years ago…

Twins! We were overwhelmed with joy and excitement: my body was accomplishing a miracle right before our eyes! However, feelings of anxiety gripped us: our family had gone from two to four overnight, without any notice or significant increase in our salaries. My husband and I planned to immediately change our lifestyles — reducing unnecessary costs — using little to no sick and vacation time during the next nine months, and working up until the very end of the pregnancy.

Honey buns. Pringles Sour Cream and Onion Chips. Charms Blow Pops. Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough Ice Cream. Pizza. French Fries. These foods have and continue to satisfy life’s little indulgences for me (and this list is by no means exhaustive!). The only difference is, as a child, teenager, and young adult, I was able to eat to my heart’s content and not gain a pound. I only wish I could be so lucky today.

I’ve been a lot more aware of my health and weight since the birth of my twins and turning 30, not to mention it’s the start of a new year. Four years ago, I was much more agile, toned, energetic, and quite simply — healthy. I was able to run 5 miles with no problem. Glancing over at my pictures, pre-pregnancy, I notice toned arms and a lean body.

Today, I’m 15 pounds heavier (maybe 20…I refuse to get on the scale!) and can’t run a mile in less than 12 minutes, let alone 5 miles. My toned arms and legs…well they’re not so toned; they jiggle!

With kids, it’s sometimes difficult, and not-to-mention expensive, to go on vacation. We typically use work travel conferences as a means to travel…free lodging and airfare (for one person anyway)...works out nicely...affordably.

We haven’t come across any conferences related to our field of work in Hawaii, though. So that’s a trip we will have to totally pay out-of-pocket. Going through junk mail, I came across a pamphlet from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP). Thoughts of taking my young son there a few years ago came to mind.

With this recession, I am even more grateful for my position as a state worker in the education field. As I watched the news the other day, the news anchor reported that government and the education field are recession proof. It’s about time for breakfast and I don’t feel like cooking. Not that I need anything else to perpetuate my sedentary behavior, but I wish there was an invention that could prepare my meals. I’m thinking of a remote-control-cooking-robot that I could program to prepare fresh gourmet food for my family and me. And I’m sure there are other folks out there that would appreciate an innovation like this: more time to spend with family, a decrease in the number of accidents resulting from cooking hazards, more access to nutritional cuisines without the hassle of preparing meals.

Unfortunately, I’m lacking the technical ingenuity and uncanny ability to develop a device such as this. These are two characteristics that Amos Tamam possessed, which allowed him to develop an innovation that provides fleet owners with the ability to process credit cars using wireless technology. Amos Tamam’s major development to the taxi industry allows cab riders in New York City and Philadelphia to pay for their ride with credit cards.

I’m no Amos Tamam, but I still think my remote-control-cooking-robot idea is innovative and would prove to be beneficial to society. I should really look to patent my idea...

Passion Meets Vocation

I wonder how many individuals are in a profession that they love…their passion? I find that one’s profession and one’s passion are often separate for most individuals. I recently came across an individual, Mohammed Babangida, who is known as a hard-driving businessman and sportsman. Mohammed Babangida is an accomplished polo player and a member of Kaduna Polo Club. Businessman. Polo player.

Like Mohammad I’m sure, for me, tackling both separately is gratifying, but a timely fulfillment. So, I’m always looking for ways to incorporate my passion, education and creative writing, into my vocation. I have been successful this year in this feat. I conducted a “poetry and after-school” workshop at a statewide conference as well as attended an “arts, literacy, and after-school programs” conference. I can’t get enough of education, writing, and the arts, particularly poetry!

I wonder if Mohammed Babangida would enjoy an amalgamation of business and polo playing? Perhaps owner of a polo club where he simultaneously serves as a polo instructor?

Lets face it, as technology advances and as more people utilize the internet for information, editorials and varying perspectives, the value in sponsoring blog articles has increased significantly. With increases in the numbers of blog users and readers daily, it’s no wonder advertisers have united with bloggers, allowing bloggers to provide reviews, articles, promotions, product endorsements and product placement ads within the articles of their blogs. Today, advertisers are not solely limited to advertising on TV, radio, and websites. In fact, the costs associated with blog advertising are considerably cheaper than expensive tv, radio, and website ads.

Like advertisers, fast-growing online public relations companies have discovered the wonderful world of blogging as well. Some public relations companies specialize in building their clients' online reputations by publishing quality content on the internet. And just how do they accomplish this? They hire bloggers.

So how does this work? I came across an article on Softduit Media's website that explained it plainly:

Instead of paying for a large expensive ad to appear on a website that will generate 100,000 visitors, advertisers are advertising on a 1,000 blogs that bring in targeted-niche traffic numbering anywhere from a few hundred to several thousand visitors. These micro niche sponsored ads can be personally crafted by a blogger in a way that incorporates the topic into the blog and readers are more likely to read it and pay attention. The cost for the advertiser is much cheaper and the audience is much less generic than the traffic that shows up at a larger site.
